Understanding the support

What is Capacity Building?

"Building the skills today that create independence tomorrow."

Make a Referral

Capacity Building through the NDIS is funded support that focuses on developing a participant's skills, confidence and independence β€” not just completing tasks for them, but helping them learn to do things for themselves over time.

Unlike Core Supports which help with day-to-day tasks, Capacity Building is an investment in a participant's future. The goal is to reduce reliance on paid support over time by genuinely growing skills and capabilities.

At Shyna Promise, we take a strengths-based approach β€” we start with what you can already do, celebrate every step forward, and work with you on the things you want to improve.

Everything included

What Does Capacity Building Include?

We help participants build real, lasting skills across all areas of daily life.

🏠

Independent Living Skills

Cooking, cleaning, budgeting and managing a home β€” building the skills to live as independently as possible.

We work with participants to develop the practical skills needed to manage their own home and daily life as independently as possible. This includes cooking and meal planning, cleaning and household organisation, laundry, managing personal items, setting up routines and budgeting for household expenses. Our approach is hands-on and participant-led β€” we guide and coach rather than doing everything for them, so each skill becomes genuinely theirs.
πŸ’°

Financial Literacy

Budgeting, banking, bill management and understanding money β€” practical financial skills for everyday life.

Our support workers can help participants develop practical financial skills that support independence. This may include learning to create and follow a budget, understanding bank statements, managing a debit card, paying bills, comparing prices when shopping, understanding NDIS plan budgets and developing good money habits.

Study & Employment Preparation

Building the skills, confidence and routines needed for TAFE, work experience or employment.

We support participants who are working toward study or employment goals. This may include building the daily routines, time management skills and confidence needed for TAFE or work, preparing for job interviews, practising workplace communication, understanding workplace expectations and managing transport to study or work.

Communication Skills

Building confidence in expressing needs, making decisions and communicating in everyday situations.

We support participants to develop their communication skills in everyday situations. This may include practising how to express needs and preferences clearly, learning to advocate for themselves, building confidence in social conversations, understanding and responding to social cues, and using communication aids or strategies recommended by a speech pathologist.
🧘

Emotional Regulation & Resilience

Building self-awareness, coping strategies and emotional tools to navigate life with more confidence.

Our support workers can assist participants to develop emotional regulation skills and build resilience. This may include learning to identify and name emotions, practising coping strategies during stressful situations, building self-awareness around triggers and responses, developing calming routines and learning to ask for help when needed.
🚌

Travel & Independence Training

Learning to use public transport, navigate the community and get around independently and safely.

We support participants to develop the skills and confidence to travel independently in their community. This may include learning to use public transport such as buses and trains, planning routes, understanding timetables, managing Go Cards, navigating familiar routes independently and building the confidence to get around safely.

Our approach

"Independence isn't a destination β€”
it's built one skill at a time."

We celebrate every step forward, no matter how small. Because every skill gained is a life made bigger.

Understanding the
Codes on Your Invoice

Capacity Building supports are funded from your Capacity Building budget β€” specifically under Improved Daily Living. This is a separate budget to your Core Supports and is specifically allocated to build skills and independence.

Capacity Building funding cannot be used for everyday task assistance β€” it must be used for activities that genuinely build skills and work toward greater independence over time.

"My son has learned to catch the bus to his volunteer job on his own. A year ago that felt impossible. The work his support worker put into building that skill with him changed everything."
